When possible trim the damaged nail. Wash the area with warm water to rid of debris. Taking care, gently apply firm pressure if the nail is bleeding. Contact your veterinarian

If the injury occured at home due to filing or cliping the nail to close or on the "meat" in the nail, dip the nail in flour to clot the bleeding. At a groomer's, they have a yellow powder they use to clot the bleeding, just like flour. Not much can be done except for being careful the next time.

If the quick has been exposed, it is unprotected and prone to infection. Take your dog to the veterinarian and find out exactly what needs to be done to keep your pet's injuries from getting worse. Dogs carry staphylococcus naturally on their skin and are prone to opportunistic staph infections, which can be fatal.

as in an ingrown dew claw? first, the nail will need to be removed, then the area bathed twice a day and bandaged.

Consult a vet and find a reputable groomer to keep nails properly trimmed during healing process. Check daily for any developing infections.
