How do I care for an infected ear piercing?

Answer by  taricha (84)

An infected ear piercing should be cleaned 2-3 times a day and no more. The easiest way to clean your piercing is with contact solution and a cotton swab. Dip the swab in contact solution and rub on both sides of your ear around the piercing. Also rub contact solution on the metal of your piercing to clean the inside.

Try using sea salt dissolved in water as a topical remedy. However, if there are signs of serious infection, i. e. oozing, odor, extreme pain, see your health care provider.

Dissolve 1/8 tsp. pure sea salt into hot distilled water. (DO NOT use iodized salt, this will only make the swelling/inflammation worse! ) Use a cotton swab to apply the mixture to the infected area.
