Make a detailed outline and refer to it often when writing. Keep notes of your characters, your plot, anything that you need to remember. When editing, reread your work before making any edits and take notes on anything that sounds wrong so you can fix it.

It is the responsibility of the author to maintain consistency throughout. Use profile sheets to create believable characters that are very real to you. Plot your story on a story board to keep track of details. There are lots of ways to maintain consistency, but the most important one is to know your story and your characters inside and out.

The easiest way to avoid inconsistencies in your novel is to keep a detailed outline of what happens in each chapter and to have thorough notes about each and every character, even the minor ones. The more notes you keep, the less you will have to page back through your writing.

The best way is to make sure that you have outlined the necessary facts of each character and also make sure that you remember that things happen in order.

Write out not just the plot line but the detailed background outline of the characters - personality, appearance, back history. And write out the description of all places in the novel. Then ensure that as you write, you describe individuals, places, and history the same at all parts of the story.
