Treat existing canker sores with an over-the-counter product. Canker sores are usually caused by an injury to the soft tissues in the mouth, so avoid crunchy and salty foods like tortilla chips and over-zealous tooth brushing. Many people who are prone to canker sores have a Vitamin B-12 deficiency, so try taking a supplement.

Many of these cases clear up with nutritional therapy. The cause of canker sores is not known. Canker sores form rapidly, and usually heal rapidly, even when untreated. If they become infected, the antibiotic tetracycline may be prescribed, in very severe cases, steroid drugs may be used to reduce inflammation.

For patients with oral canker sores, application of a topical anesthetic or a protective paste provides symptomatic relief and makes it possible to eat without pain, thereby allowing the person to consume enough dietary nutrients that would promote wound dealing (such as protein and vitamin C) and thus, also cure the cancer sore.

Canker sores occur for a variety of reasons, and if you figure out what triggers yours, the best thing to do is avoid that trigger. To treat an existing canker sore, you might try dabbing Maalox or Mylanta directly onto the area with a cotton swab.
