Powdered alum placed onto the canker sore with the tip of a toothpick stings, but will dry up the sore quickly. If you can only find alum crystals, grind them into a powder. Dampen the end of the toothpick with tap water, put tip in the powder to pick up grains and put powder on the sore.

I usually use Lysine to treat Canker sores. Take two pills a day, you can even put some lysine directly on the sore. It seems to help the pain too.
