They use a central pump that sprays jets of water at the dishes to clean them and then rinses them off. Some even dry them afterwards with a heating element.

Dishwashers work by coating dishes with a combination of water and soap. Typically the washer fills with water, there is a sprayer designed to send water into every area of the machine,a soap release spreads soap. The washer drains out dirty water, refills and rinses dishes. Heat then dries them after the rinse water is drained.
