Chameleons possess cells known as chromatophores which enable the change of color we witness. These very specialized cells are located underneath the outer layer of the chameleon's skin. As necessary, the chameleon's cells release pigment granules that allow the lizard to blend in with its surroundings.

Chameleons have unique skin with scales that contain individual indepentantly color-changing blasticists. They don't change color to blend in with their surroundings, this is purely myth. They change color based on mood. They will be shades of green while resting, and bright hues of rainbow when angry, as a threat display. They also change when hungry or hot.
