The reason European wars played out in North America and Canada was that many of these countries had colonies and interests in the New World. For example, the French occupied or controlled much of Canada and the Louisiana area. When France and England warred in Europe, they naturally also extended their conflict to where they had forces in the Americas.

During this period England and France fought to deny each other control of trade and natural resources available in North America and thus dominate their rival. The colonies learned that England's strategic view of newly aquired lands were in direct conflict with their own vision of the use and exploitation of the wilderness.
