A "hallmark" is a distinct characteristic. The greeting card company was founded by Joyce Hall, who was originally a postcard salesmen. When the business dried up during the war, he joined with his brother to create Christmas, then greeting cards. The first logo played on the "Hall" name and "hallmark."

Joyce C. Hall founded Hallmark, so that is where the name comes from. As to how it got started, it started with the popularity of postcards around 1903.
