Question by  OJG (18)

How deep should you set pergola posts?

Answer by  Opa (19)

It all depends. How big is the construction (especially how heavy) that is supported by the posts? What soil are you putting them in? If you have a very soft soil, like clay, on average a metre would be okay. But if you are putting them in harder soil, you might pour them into concrete, 50cm is ok.

This all depends on height of the pergola and what you want to use in the whole with the post, either concrete, gravel, or just dirt.

Whether setting pergola posts or any other type of posts, one has to consider the frost line and set them below it.

Depending on the weight of the pergola, the maximum depth would be 3 feet or until virgin ground to avoid settling and the minimum depth would be 2 1/2 feet.
