Unfortunately kidney failure and kidney disease are among the most common health ailments in cats. Kidney problems are not gender specific and widely occur across both genders. Age is a common factor in kidney disease as it seems to be brought on by old age. They can be some genetic predisposition to some types of kidney disease, especially PKD.

Seems to be more common in males. At least that's been the case in my history of cat ownership. Cats seem to have a tendency to have kidney problems.

It's very prominent, particularly in males, ands they can fail VERY quickly before you even know they're sick. Avoid clay or clumping litters. Litter like Feline Pine is best.
