How can you know if a hole is a sinkhole?

You can tell if a hole is a sinkhole if it appears after a period of heavy rain,if the hole reappears after the hole has been filled, or if runoff water goes into the hole.

The easiest way to tell is to put a good bit of fill dirt into the hole. If the hole reappears in a day or so, it kind of eats the dirt, then you are probably dealing with a sinkhole and will have to take more drastic measures to fix it.
