How can you get an awkward moment back on track?

I seems to always be stuck in awkward moments, and I usually make them worse.

A smile and maybe a quick joke may be the best bet. Sometimes when you simply ignore an awkward moment it makes the moment worse. When you show to others that you have the strength to handle such situations, they will respect that. And then, you will probably start to get into fewer and fewer such problems.

A good way is to acknowledge the moment rather than pretend it didn't happen, to say something like "well let's just pretend I didn't say that... so anyway..." and that way you are taking control of the situation and moving it on without allowing anyone to become hung up on what happened.

You're probably taking the wrong approach to this issue. Just act like nothing ever happened. Just get up and brush yourself off and the event will go on as planned. Most people will probably even forget about the whole incident. It's okay to get red in the face and be embarrassed, but move on quickly.

A common tactic is to acknowledge the obvious like this "well, that was awkward", and then move right on to a new subject.
