How can you apply Minwax stain over paint?

Stain is not designed to go over paint. It supposed to be applied to clean unfinished wood then sealed. If you apply it to paint it will just sit on top of it if it doesn't lift it. You need to sand the wood then stain and seal it.

i do not think you can apply stain over paint as the stain is meant to penatrate wood. with the wood already painted it wont be able to penatrate and when you wipe it off after applying it wont have any penatration and will wipe off completely.

If the paint has a shiny finish,you are going to have to dull it by sanding. Use a light coat of stain and give it plenty of time to dry before clear coating.
