How can I troubleshoot a program that won't open in Vista?

You can start by checking the specific error that you get and probably search online for that. If its a compatibility problem, then you can try running the program in XP mode. If its a game, it may usually be a screen resolution problem.

Make sure you have administrative rights on the computer. If you don't, the software will neither install correctly (if at all) or run correctly. Secondly, find out if the software is Vista compatible; not all software is.

Try Vista's comparability mode. Right click on the program short cut or the actual executable file with the extension of. exe. Click the Comparability tab, check the box "Run the program in comparability mode", then choose the OS the program was original intended to work with in the dropdown box.

Go in the explorer to the exe file that you can't execute. Right click on the file and select properties. Choose compatibility mode.

you could try running it in compatibility mode- right click,click properties,then in the compatibility tab check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows XP.

Yes, Vista has its own troubleshooting program that would could launch from the start menu. This will allow you to fix the problem.
