How can I tell if someone is trying to manipulate me?

Always go with your gut feeling, mine has never been wrong. Also, I think it was Oprah who said, doubt means don't.

Generally speaking, people who don't have ulterior motives, do not make other people uncomfortable. If you have an inner voice, a little red flag, telling you something is not right, listen to it.

yes I agree with the twisting of words, this is a classic and shows the other person is manipulating the situation. Whenever I have pointed it out to the person, they are in denial (another sign).

I think that manipulation is felt by an uncomfortable feeling from the receiver. If you feel a pattern of negative feelings with a person or situation and it happens more than once it could be a pattern.

You can tell a lot about a person from the microexpressions that their face will show during your conversation. For example, asymmetrical micro movements of the upper lip like a mini-scowl are signs of contempt. Furthermore, a lack of a normal hesitation period (.5 to 1 second) between questions and answers are signs of someone who MAY be lying.

The person tries to twist your words and make out your in the wrong so you will question yourself. By doing this they gain control of you and the situation.
