Contact the taxing authority that has the lien on your report. They will need to remove it. You should be able to clear it up if it is in error.

The credit reporting agency cannot remove the tax lien report. You can put an addendum on the report explaining what you think happened. In order to get the record changed you will have to get the taxing body to correct the lien.

If it is an error on the credit report, you can challenge it through the credit reporting agency. If it is a lien that the IRS erroneously assessed against you, you have to contact the IRS. There are time limits to challenge this with the IRS, so act quickly.

You will need to contact the holder of the tax lien and prove you are not the one to whom it it owed. Otherwise, they will re-list it as unpaid after you have had it removed from your report. The tax lien holder may be attempting to collect from you or have you incorrectly associated with the debt.
