The "old"-way is to use the edge of a putty-knife or a flat-bladed-screwdriver to scrape it out a little-bit at a time. Some modern-rotary-saws (Dremel, RotoZip, ...) have a grout-removal-attachment which mills it out a lot-faster, but you need to be careful to control the saw and not damage your-tile.

Old grout can be removed by using a grinder. After removing most of the grout, you can use a carbide tipped scraper to remove the rest by hand.

Specialized grout removal tools are available at hardware stores, or use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to chisel out grout, taking care not to scratch the surrounding tile.

You can use a Dremel or other rotary tool with a grout removal bit -- buy a spare, they break easily. Or use a hand tool called a grout saw.

Removing old grout is a tedious process and you run the risk of damaging your tile. The best way is to chip away at it with a small tool like a pick or a screw driver. It is a good idea to use the same color when you re-grout so you don't have to remove every speck.

Take some vinegar and put in some baking soda. This will make a chemical that can help you remove the grout. You may want to use a sharp substance to help you.
