The best way to recognize an insect nest is to notice something that looks slightly out of place with the surroundings. For example an ant's nest often has a large ring of cast off plant material around it. Wasp's nests often look like patches of mud in the corners of buildings.

Not all insects make nests, but ants, which are insects make easy to identify ones. Look for small mounds of sand with a central tunnel. Often you will see ants coming out of the tunnel with grains of sand in their mandibles. That is how the mounds form. Some ant mounds can be very large.
