Because autism onset occurs during childhood, recognizing adult symptoms may be more difficult if the individual is somewhat adjusted to living with it. Characteristics might include: being very talented at something particular; being quiet but potentially emotional; reculsive and fairly anti-social behavior; becoming very absorbed in puzzle-like tasks. They may get frustrated easily especially when provoked while communicating.

There is no such thing as adult-onset autism. Autistic disorders have an onset in infancy or early childhood, with the primary symptom being lifelong impairments in social-emotional skills. Similar symptoms that first appear in adulthood are likely due to other factors (such as dementia in older adults)and should be evaluated professionally.

We often look for autism in children. We now realize that autism is a very real condition that can lead to social or other difficulties in grade school. However, in adult life autism is very real. Some of the signs of autism are person: gets easily overstimulated, person seems to interpret data differently, etc. These people are often very intelligent.
