This depends initially on what problem you are trying to diagnose, and whether this is auto, home central, individual unit. There are extensive websites to guide you, as well as HVAC chat sites, and I know from experience, these excellent techs will be happy to walk you through it.

The way That I perform an AC Diagnostic is by seeing if the AC compressor is working properly. I would either do this by checking the pressure or sending it to a mechanic

If you are wanting to perform AC diagnostics then you will need to remove the cover. If you have the cover off then you can operate on the AC issues.
