Your local county extension office is one of the best places to start for plant identification for native plants. For houseplants, the internet or your local library can help. You need to photograph the leaves and flowers if any.

Your local nursery should have Hispanic or Oriental employees who, for a modest fee ,will be happy to teach you interrogation techniques that will get houseplants to identify themselves. Even if there is a language barrier these guys can usually force out the desired information. Wearing a green uniform similar to an Immigration officer should also help.
