Wash your hair as soon as possible after dyeing using an anti-dandruff shampoo. Leave the shampoo in your hair for three to five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Don't condition after this wash. Repeat the process the next day, and then condition your hair thoroughly once you've rinsed the shampoo out.

You can tone down an unwanted color by using color care shampoo, such as you may find at a beauty supply store. It depends on what color you are trying to tone. Ask the assistant there to find out which is most suitable and advice will be available at your request. Toners remove unwanted hues from your hair.

It is possible to tone down permanant hair dye using liquid dish soap. This will tone it down to around 7 shades. This is also better than using peroxide or another sort of bleaching agent because it does not dry out your hair. Just wash your hair like you are using regular shampoo.

Permanent hair dye more than likely has at least 20 volume peroxide included if you've purchased the do it yourself hair coloring kits available in most drugstores. If you are wanting less deposit of color, you will need to purchase a lower volume of developer such as a 10 volume peroxide.
