First I wash them in hot water with just detergent. Then I run them through again with bleach and detergent. This might have to be done a second time. The bleach will kill the mildew smell. You will also need a good detergent like Tide. Soaking doesn't really help but lots of bleach and hot water should do the trick.

Depending on the color of the towels, there are a few things you can try. If they are mostly white of light colors. Wash them on the hot setting with laundry detergent and a cup of clorox. If they towels are bright or bold colors, still use hot setting, but use a color safe clorox.

I always use bleach, you can try color safe bleach for your colored towels and regular bleach for white towels. This helps if they are not badly mildewed. You may want to let them soak for awhile so that you only have to do it once.
