You have until October 15 to e-file a return for the current year. You can get software thru either the IRS web site or from a commercial vendor. The IRS site lets you file for free if you meet the requirements. Many tax software vendors have rules on who is elegible to file for free.

You can go online and find several options to file your taxes online for free. The US government will let you do it, but this assumes your taxes are simple with no complications. If you do have a more complicated return where you want to find the lowest tax liability, you would be better off paying for a tax software.
