How can I e-file a tax return for free?

You have until October 15 to e-file a return for the current year. You can get software thru either the IRS web site or from a commercial vendor. The IRS site lets you file for free if you meet the requirements. Many tax software vendors have rules on who is elegible to file for free.

You can go online and find several options to file your taxes online for free. The US government will let you do it, but this assumes your taxes are simple with no complications. If you do have a more complicated return where you want to find the lowest tax liability, you would be better off paying for a tax software.

Go to the IRS web site: www. irs. gov. Click on "Everyone Can Use Free File. " If you qualify, several tax preparation software companies provide free tax preparation and free e-filing. If you don't you can fill out the blank forms that IRS has online and then e-file through IRS.

Depending on your income bracket, you may be eligible for free preparation and e-file. Anyone can use Free Fillable Forms to e-file, but you must prepare the tax forms yourself. Check the IRS website for free e-filing federal opportunities. Several states offer free online forms and tax prep. Check your state websites for more information.
