Believe me, you'll be fine. I've always traveled with my dad, and he is not exactly what you'd call small, and there is always someone bigger than him.
The extension adds about a 10"-12". Just ask the attendant as you board. You might want to check with the airline ahead of time for the seat dimensions and suggestions.
