Does an episiotomy cause pain?

What hurts more during childbirth, an episiotomy or allowing the perineum to tear?

An episiotomy certainly causes pain (imagine a tear of any kind in the skin or in a private region). Childbirth in general is extremely painful.

I had perineum tears twice and one episiotomy. Both required stitches. I was numbed with the episiotomy, but not with the tears. Pain about the same. Episiotomy healed better.
