A two-year associate degree is the minimum for becoming a respiratory therapist, but a four-year Bachelor's or a Masters are needed to advance in the field. Medical school isn't required.

No, respiratory thereapy is a training program all to itself. You will be carrying out doctors orders but you will not be functioning independent of a doctor. One could easily see a respiratory therapist going back to school and becoming a doctor and specializing in the treatment of respiratory dieases

Respiratory therapists are not doctors. They do have to go to school, but it is usually a vocational or two-year program.
