You must have a title as a proof of ownership to pawn a car and get money for it. The DMV has paperwork you can file that lets you prove you are the owner of the car and you can get another title if you are the rightful owner of a car, but you'll need proof you are the owner.

You must be the legal owner of the car to pawn it. The car title is required in most states. You can even pawn the title without the car.
