Do you have a root canal before a crown?

My dentist tells me this is standard.

Yes, it is much easier on you, the dentist and the tooth to get a root canal first. If you get a crown done first they will just have to cut through it and replace it. The root canal is in most cases done first.

NO, you do not necessarily need to have a root canal before a crown. It is possible to have a crown put on and not need a root canal.

Crowns without a preceding root canal are not unheardof, but I don't believe a root canal is a procedure that a dentist would recommend if it is not necessary. If you are uncomfortable with the diagnosis, try getting a second opinion from another dentist.

I have a crown on a tooth that has not had a root canal. It is dependant on how severely damaged the tooth structure is.
