Question by  toothpick (57)

Do walking and running (the same distance) burn the same number of calories?

My friend insists they are the same, but running wears me out a lot more.

You do burn a negligible amount more by running, but it is surprisingly small. In general, the calories you burn by walking a mile are the same as by running that same distance (but of course you do it in a shorter period of time when you run).

They burn almost the same amount of calories for the actual time or distance you walk/run. However, running causes you to burn more calories when you are resting.

Walking a mile and running a mile burn about the same amount of calories. A good rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile. Using other modes of transport however, are very different. Rollerblading, or cycling a mile burn much less per mile than running/walking.

Running burns a lot more calories than walking. You are using more energy when you run. You can walk 5 miles with no rest but hard to run that far.
