They still have dress shops, but not to the extent as in the 1960's. I remember going to a shop with my mother, and the salesperson would bring out whatever I asked for, and would offer opinions about how things looked, tailoring services, and discounts on the clothes.

Yes. These are often called boutiques. They can offer dresses, professional suits, evening gowns or all of the above. Dress Barn is a cheaper retailer that only sells dresses, and they have locations around the U.S.
