Do I need to create a new environment variable so my DOS applications can run in Windows XP?

It depends. Since Windows XP is an operating system designed after the era of DOS, many DOS applications are inherently compatible with Windows XP. However, some DOS applications requires environment variables that are not provided by Windows XP directly, where new environment and the corresponding variables need to be created.

Most of the times this is not necessary as legacy dos applications are automatically managed by windows xp. Anyway should you need to set enviorment variables you can do it by "my computer" -> enviorment variables.

Ideally you should create a environment variable only if your application needs to be called or executed from any Directory path.

DOS application is totally different form windows XP. The only similarity is that the DOS can be used in the Windows XP, normally when you open a Command prompt, only DOS commands can be used in the prompt. there is no need to create new environment variable for running a DOS in windows XP.

Right click on "My computer", Properties > Advanced > "Environment-Variables". You can also go "Control Panel">System>Advanced>Environment-Variables. In either case, in the window that pops up, edit/add your new variable.

No, the programs should be able to run without this type of application. You can run anything different program at any time.
