Some states allow you to renew your license online. If you are able to renew your license online in your state, you will not need to get your picture taken.

Generally, if you are going to the DMV to renew a driver's license, with modern digital photography today, they will take a new picture and issue a new license. If you are mailing in for a renewal, you will likely just get an extension card and no new picture.
