You don't necessarily need a 4 wheel drive for towing a dolly. All the weight that is being towed is positioned to the rear of the rear of the vehicle. So unless you plan on towing during bad weather conditions 4 wheel drive isn't needed. Just make sure you have the correct hitch and the vehicle can tow the weight.

I would totally recommend 4-wheel drive for dolly towing because the weight can become pretty heavy. Without 4-wheel drive you may create problems.

No, it is not necessary. Two-wheel-drive truck is fine. All you need is power capacity to tow. You must be careful. Tow driving is different from regular driving though.
