Hornets burrow into the ground, under shrubs and sometimes into planters. If the conditions aren't good for the ground (dry, sparse vegetation, etc. ) then they will find another suitable place.

Yes, hornets have been known to burrow in trees. Specific types can dig tunnels. These particular hornets are solitary types of bugs and do not hive together. Other more common hornets "eat" their way into crannies and nooks to establish hives.

Hornets won't burrow into a live tree, but they certainly will make their nest in the sheltered environment of a hollow in a dead or dying tree. Some material used to construct a hornets nest includes the partially digested bark from the tree in which they live, but they don't actually eat the wood like termites or some ants.

Hollowed, mostly dead trees, yes. Hornets prefer dark sheltered places to nest, but as the colony grows, the nest grows out, until it becomes quite visible.

Hornets will burrow in trees. Hornets will build a hive hanging from the tree and then they will be around the hive and some of them will go into holes in the trees. But a single hornet will not burrow in a tree by itself.
