Figure 1. 5 hp per ton, so a 3 ton unit would be 4. 5 hp times 746 watts in a hp equals 3357 divided by line voltage 220 equals 15. 26. Include a safety factor, and a 20 amp breaker would do it.

It is very simple to determine the right size breaker for a central unit because it is written on the manufacturer's tag on the unit itself.
