The E. P. A. found after an oil spill that the best way to do this was by using a mild dish soap detergent. You should use luke warm water as well. It is very important to use mild to pressure to minimize any physical harm to the doves. Take extra care with the wings so you dont damage the feathers.

Cleaning doves can be precarious work. Start by misting them with warm water. Once they become aware they are wet, their instincts will kick in and they will begin preening themselves. Doves are sociable birds, so when one starts preening they will all follow suit.
