As far as I'm aware, you heard correctly. While it hasn't been officially announced by Apple or anything like that, iCards do appear to have disappeared from stores. I have not been able to find them anywhere lately. I would guess they have been discontinued.

I used to have Mobileme by apple and they did have Icards included for free the first year I used them but they have discontinued them much to my chagrin.

There are rumors that the main reason for the withdrawal of the application is great competition in the market of this type of applications.

As of July 9, 2008, Apple discontinued the iCards service. Alternatives can now be found in Apple Mail in the stationery category.
