There are various types of shingles available on the market today. Some are designed to be inexpensive to buy but do not have a long service life. Other shingles are designed to provide long service, but can be costly to buy. Light colored shingles reflect heat and last longer while dark colored shingles absorb heat and don't last as long.

Standard 3 or 4 tab shingles will have a life of 15 to 20 years. Arcitectural shingles will last between 25 and 30 years. Metal roofing will be guaranteed for 30 - 50 years.
