Carfax or any other service like it is essentially a VIN report. They use the VIN to record instances out of the ordinary to the vehicle record, which can be accessed nationwide. Yes, VIN number is redundant; there are people who refer to it as just VIN.

Probably the biggest report seller is Carfax. Order a report for you VIN online as long as it is not too old. VIN "number" is redundant but is typically used by people that doesn't know it stands for vehicle identification number.
