The size of the star and the distance away from the earth greatly affect the appearance and the brightness of the star.

a few reasons can cause this. 1. if the star is closer to the earth, then the reflected light from the sun has to travel less distance and hence looks brighter. 2. if the star is bigger, then there is more mass for the sunlight to reflect off of, so it looks brighter.

Some stars appear brighter than others because they are older, or hotter, or larger than other stars. Others appear brighter because they are much closer to the earth than their counterparts. Distance, size, and age are all factors.
