The term chivalry, originally referred to a very strict code of ethics, and conduct, whereby a knight was expected to live, and behave, in day to day life. Then, as in more recent times, this code was and is a guideline for behaving in a gentle, respectful, and honorable manner, and for maintaining a reputation for honesty, and fair play.

Chivalry is a male demonstration of special treatment to females. It includes things like holding doors, speaking politely and considerately and using formal language that is intended to win the attention and affection of a female. It received its popularity from the treatment of medieval knights to ladies of the royal court.
