Gender (sex) of the offspring is based on whether the male contributes an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. XX = Female and XY = male. The female, by default, always contributes an X. The male contribution is random. No known physical trait leads a male to contribute one chromosome to the other.

The answer for this seems to be yes and no. According to behavioral tests and experiments to date, for example, women tend to be more altruistic, socially adept, and talkative than men. Men tend to have higher spatial intelligence but also higher rates of both most diseases and violence.

Yes, sex in animals can be linked to a "trait ratio". You compare their sexual behavior to the general behavior of the herd. Since sex is a normal human activity, and we live in groups, perhaps it is appropriate to also measure us in this way as well, as some people deviate from the norm.
