Can my granddaughter get a disability check if I claim her on my taxes?

Yes. Disability income is independent of the fact that someone is disabled or claimed as a dependent by someone else. For example, retired and blind individuals may receive disability checks while legally supported by their children. There may be restrictions on how much and for what purpose of her disability income can be used if she is under 21.

Your daughter can get a disability check and it has nothing to do with your claiming her. But you can only claim her in the future if you provide more than 50 percent of her income. There is a real good chance that if she does get disability that you will not be able to claim her anymore.
