Can I save gas by coasting in neutral with an automatic transmission?

Well being in neutral will lower the RPM's so yes it will use less gas but unless you are going downhill your car will slow down pretty quickly. Also dont drift in neytral behind a big rig truck, this costs many people their lives trying to save gas.

If you happen to be on a very long downhill slope, maybe you could save a fraction of a quart in several miles. You have more control in gear.

Technically you can. The engine rpm will usually be lower then if it were in gear. However be careful since there is no engine braking availible.

Yes, neutral cuts out the engine from using gas to push the car forward and all use of gas is diverted to keeping the car on and functional.
