This an old wives tale- rats are pretty resistant to smell, however moth balls will drive off cats who can kill rats. You need to eradicate anything attracting them, close off entry points, try traps or a professional to get rid of them- using poison is almost always a bad idea, they can die inside your house with resulting stink.

The smell of mothballs is a wonderful choice for keeping mice, rats and other rodents at bay. The newer versions do not smell like the old mothballs, but come in everything from lavender to lemon scent. This is an efficient way to rid your home of pests without using poisons.

I don't think mothballs will get rid of them. You may have to put down mouse traps to get rid of them. Mothballs only kill moths or keeps them away from you clouthes.

Yes, mothballs as for mice are a good rat repellent. They can be pushed into openings and out of the reach of children and pets.
