Cats are physically able to swim, but most don't like or want to and try to avoid the water at all costs. However, there are some cat breeds that actually like the water, like Maine Coons. Some have been known to sit in sinks and jump in the bathtub with their owner.

Yes a cat can swim, although their preference is to not be in the water. Swimming is a survival instinct that will kick in when a cat is in the water. A cat will swim similar to the way a dog paddles as opposed to a human type of swimming.
