There are a lot of small free games on facebook, some of which allow roleplay. The most famous large scale games are runescape and perfect world, both of which are free to play. You can, if you wish, pay to have extras in these games.

Check out , or google free mmorpg's and you'll get a huge list. Free Realms by Sony is a pretty good browser based game with lots to do and very good levels. There are microtransactions for it, but it's perfectly playable without it. It's quick and easy to learn, and entertaining.

It depends on the game. From what I have seen it is about fifty - fifty. Although some are free, you have to pay for some of the extras that make the game more fun.
