The genus, Helianthus, includes both annual and perennial species. The large bloomed sunflowers are annual, while the perennial sunflowers have much smaller blooms on a branched inflorescence.

An annual, the sunflower is a choice for many gardens, borders, and other areas. Also a vegetable, this plant is native American. The sunflower has served as snakebite medicine and ointment, dye for materials, body paint, oil for cooking, and sunflower seeds for snacks. The tall plant attracts birds and provides feed for our feathered friends.

Sunflowers are annuals, that are found in the Americas. Annuals are flowers which sprout, grow and seed within a year. Perennials however can live two years or more. Sunflowers in the wild may appear to be perennials because they re-seed themselves. In an agricultural the seeds are harvested thus they are preveted from doing this.
